A few weeks ago, I was invited to Hotel La Tour in Birmingham to try their new Spring Afternoon Tea. I love afternoon tea and Hotel La Tour have always had one of the finest in Birmingham and I was looking forward to seeing if this was still the case. I was greeted with a glass of champagne and left to peruse the menu and make the difficult decision as to which of their many varieties of teas to sample.
I tried the Masala Chai tea which was quite strong but not overpowering. It made a change from my usual English breakfast tea. There is a tea for everyone on the menu and coffee/other drinks for those who do not. I went for the afternoon tea with meat and fish in the sandwiches. The sandwich selection included salmon and cream cheese, chicken, with ham and mustard. I was very pleased to see that the Welsh Rarebit dip (a cheese and beer sauce) was still a key part of the afternoon tea. It is one of my favourite elements as I have not seen anywhere else and I could eat it by the bucket load!
The next level contained two scones with generous amounts of strawberry jam and clotted cream. One was plain and the other fruited. They were light, crumbly and delicious. The scones actually caused a debate between myself and Ting from
The Ting Thing about whether to put the jam or the cream on the scone first. I do it with jam on the bottom and cream on top which is the Cornish way while Ting did hers with the cream on the bottom, the Devon way. How do you eat yours?
I was starting to get full up now but solely for the purposes of research (and the fact that it was all delicious!) I started on the last level which had an Opera cake, Lime and Ginger cheesecake, a raspberry tart and a banana and chocolate macaroon. My favourite was the Opera cake as it was rich, dense and very yummy. I would like to try a larger slice of it next time please! I also loved the raspberry tart as it reminded me of my childhood holidays spent in France buying and eating fresh fruit tarts from local patisserie.
You can even enjoy local singers while you are devouring your afternoon tea
I previously reviewed afternoon tea at Hotel La Tour here and here
Afternoon tea costs £19.95 per person without champagne and £24.95 with a glass of champagne.
I was invited to Hotel La Tour to sample their afternoon tea. All opinions are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.
